How a child receives support

Based on the diagram “So that the child succeeds: understanding learning needs” (Lithuanian Centre for Inclusion in Education).

At the kindergarten:

  1. The teacher notices the child’s difficulties.
  2. The teacher gives the child support.
  3. If the teacher’s support is not enough, the teacher turns to the Child Welfare Commission.
  4. An initial assessment of learning needs is carried out.
  5. Educational support is provided at the kindergarten.

If support at the kindergarten is not enough and the education needs to be adapted — at the pedagogical psychological service:

  1. A full assessment of special educational needs is carried out.
  2. Education is adapted and/or support is provided at the kindergarten.
  3. The effectiveness of the support and of the adapted education is assessed.

The Child Welfare Commission is a team of teachers and specialists at the kindergarten who look after the child’s safety and a supportive learning environment. Educational support is help given to children, their parents (guardians, carers) and teachers by specialists working at the kindergarten (psychologists, speech therapists, special education teachers, social pedagogues and others). Adapting education means adjusting the learning activities so that the child finds learning easier and experiences success.
